Introduction to Training Within Industry (TWI) Certification Program

Optima’s TWI Certificate Program aims to deliver a better-skilled workforce, improved labor and management relations, productivity improvements and a focus on continuous improvement.

Our three-component TWI program is the ideal process for training people within your organization who are responsible for mentoring others in job skills, monitoring and effectively managing continuous improvement initiatives and doing so with consistent and proven results. Three, one-day sessions conducted throughout the year, will certify you in Job Instruction (JI), Job Methods (JM) and Job Relations (JR) skills.


TWI – Job Instruction

As is frequently the case, most processes are performed by various workers using different methods. This workshop provides an overview of TWI with a focus on the Job Instruction program. Job Instruction is how to get a person to quickly remember how to do a job correctly, safely and conscientiously. Developing these work standards provides the foundation for employee engagement, continuous improvement and problem solving. JI is a vital step in the TWI process, ensuring the same thing is done the same way across operators and shifts.

TWI – Job Methods

Job Methods is to identify and question every detail of a job – every step, motion or action – to determine the best way to do a job with the available manpower, machines and materials. It’s the TWI program that trains leaders in how to improve their work processes and procedures; how to break down a specific job exactly as it’s currently being completed. Every detail is questioned so that a new and improved method can be developed and applied, yielding significant benefits including reduced cost through productivity gains, increased throughput and reduced work in process.

TWI – Job Relations

Job Relations provides a foundation or starting point in your continuous improvement program by building on the skills of leaders. The intention behind the Job Relations program is to understand how people interact with each other and how best to manage, mentor or develop these people. Participants are instructed on the basics of personality profiles, the foundations of good relations and problem resolution. Job Relations will provide the basic analytical tools to carry out continuous improvement initiatives.


This Breakfast Series event will provide an overview of the TWI Certificate Program along with an abbreviated Job Instruction, Job Methods and Job Relations presentation. Pricing for the three, one-day workshops to be held in April, August and December of 2018 will be:

Alliance, Leaders Roundtable members: $1200

Non-members: $1500

*Alliance members can use free workshop seats to attend the April, August and December workshops.

Dave Lange

David has consulted with a wide variety of manufacturers throughout Wisconsin to improve productivity and bottom line results. Dave’s primary responsibility is to teach lean principles and to apply lean tools with employees at all levels and in all functions of the organization through a variety of methods. Dave’s role in the implementation of lean manufacturing techniques was that of coach and mentor, and emphasized the importance of connecting strategy to actionable operations improvements. He creates lasting change with his clients.
